Project Overview
Project Details
The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) was excited to reintroduce the proposed interchange improvement in Delaware County, Ohio.
In 2017, ODOT completed studies of the I-71 interchange with U.S. 36/SR 37 to evaluate options for:
- Reducing congestion and improving traffic flow on U.S. 36/SR 37.
- Enhancing safety by eliminating backups on I-71.
- Supporting future growth in Delaware County according to land use and economic development plans.
- Improving east-west connectivity for commuters and freight.
As a result, ODOT proposed constructing a combined interchange to the south, which would provide alternate access to U.S. 36/SR 37 and the new Sunbury Parkway. Originally, this section and the Wilson Road extension were to be funded privately, but that funding was no longer expected. ODOT intended to advance these improvements using public funds, prompting a re-evaluation of previous studies and additional public involvement.
At that time, ODOT was revising a feasibility study with Delaware County, Berkshire Township, and the City of Sunbury. This included evaluating alignments for Sunbury Parkway and the Wilson Road Extension, updating traffic analyses, and assessing ecological and historic resources, as well as potential noise impacts.
