Project Overview

  • Location of Project: Minnesota

  • Type of Project: Powerline

  • Timeline: 2022-2030

Project Details

The project encompasses two main segments and additional improvements:

Segment one involves constructing approximately 140 miles of new 345-kV double-circuit transmission lines. These lines will run along existing transmission corridors from Minnesota Power’s Iron Range Substation in Itasca County to Great River Energy’s Benton County Substation near St. Cloud in Benton County.

Segment two focuses on replacing two existing transmission lines:
– A 20-mile 230-kV line will be upgraded to two 345-kV circuits, connecting Benton County Substation to the new Big Oaks Substation in Sherburne County. This new substation is part of the separate Alexandria to Big Oaks project.
– Another 20-mile 345-kV line from Benton County Substation to Sherco Substation in Sherburne County will also be replaced with double-circuit 345-kV structures, enhancing transmission capacity along existing corridors.
