Project Overview
Project Details
The Birmingham Northern Beltline is a planned 52.5-mile northern bypass around Birmingham, Alabama, running through northern and western Jefferson County, designated as future Interstate 422 (originally Appalachian Regional Commission Corridor X-1, and also carried as Alabama SR 959). It would run from I-59 in northeast Jefferson County to the I-459 interchange near Bessemer, completing the outer loop around the metro alongside the existing I-459. FHWA now estimates full build-out at $5.44 billion — over $100 million per mile, against an original estimate of $3.4 billion — with completion projected around 2047–48. The route is divided into roughly 10 segments, prioritizing northern Jefferson County connections before the westward extensions toward Bessemer. Construction first began in February 2014 on a 1.34-mile section north of Pinson connecting SR 79 to SR 75. Now in 2026, Landowners that are located in the US 31 to SR 79 section of the project are starting to receive offers. If you are a landowner who has an offer, we will review your offer/appraisal at no cost to determine just compensation.
