Valley Link North Transmission Line

The Valley North Transmission Line is a proposed 1 billion, 765-kilovolt (kV) electrical project. It spans roughly 260 miles between Putnam County, West Virginia, and Frederick County, Maryland. The line will stand 135 to 165 feet tall and carry the highest-capacity voltage in the U.S. to power homes and data centers.

Project Details

The Valley North Project is a proposed 765-kilovolt transmission line running approximately 260 miles from the John Amos power station in Putnam County, West Virginia, to a new substation in Frederick County, Maryland, crossing roughly 15 to 20 West Virginia counties along the way. It is being developed by Valley Link Transmission Company LLC, a joint venture of Dominion Energy, FirstEnergy Transmission, and Transource Energy (itself jointly owned by American Electric Power and Evergy), in response to reliability needs identified by regional grid operator PJM Interconnection amid rapidly growing regional electricity demand. The line would require a new 200-foot right-of-way for its entire length, carried on steel lattice structures roughly 130 to 200 feet tall, and would add new 765kV substations at Welton Springs in Hardy County, West Virginia, and Rocky Point in Frederick County, Maryland. No route has been selected. Valley Link is currently holding its first round of open houses, running June 29 through July 29, 2026, to gather public input on broad “study segments.” A second round is planned for late 2026, with proposed and alternative routes identified — and regulatory applications filed in West Virginia, Virginia, and Maryland — in early to mid-2027. The targeted in-service date is 2029.
