Wabash Ave in Springfield Set for Major Upgrade

The stretch of Wabash Ave in Sprinfield, IL at Koke Mill Rd to Moffett St. in Curran, IL, is set for a major upgrade after being included in IDOT’s six year transportation plan.

The state of Illinois expects it will cost $21.4 million over the next three summers — including federal, state and local funds — for planning and improvements to Wabash Avenue, including widening a 2.74-mile bottleneck from three to five lanes.

Project overview

The $21.4 million worth of improvements planned to Wabash Avenue on the west side of Springfield are actually two projects spread over three summers, including design work. Here is a breakdown of each:

Project 1

$1.9 million resurfacing, signal modifications and median improvements; bids taken fall of 2013; construction spring of 2014 and completed summer of 2014.

Project 2

* $19.5 million reconstruction and expanding from three to five lanes on 2.74-mile section between Koke Mill Road in Springfield and Moffet Street in Curran.

* New curbs and gutter, 8-foot paved shoulders, bikeway and sidewalks.

* Cockrell Lane reconstructed from Hollis Drive to Ogden Road; Hollis Drive reconstructed from Mercantile Drive to west of Koke Mill Road.

* Bid-letting early 2014; construction spring or early summer 2014 and completion in summer of 2015.
