Illinois legislators approved a bill in early June that would give control of the proposed South Suburban Airport to the Illinois Department of Transportation, signifiying a major step forward in the decades’ old project.

Thaddeus Jones, D-Calumet City called the proposed airport an “economic engine” for the south suburbs as a whole because of the 11,000 construction and 14,000 permanent jobs it would create.

Currently pending before Governor Pat Quinn, if signed, the bill would permit IDOT to begin entering into contracts with developers and companies for purposes of the airport.
