Illiana Still Waiting on Federal Approval

What was supposed to be a done deal has turned into a waiting game.

Officials from both IDOT and INDOT are still waiting federal approval on the proposed route for the Illiana Expressway. No record of decision had appeared in the Federal Register as of Thursday afternoon and earlier this week Indiana Department of Transportation spokesman Jim Pinkerton acknowledged the required approval was not yet in hand.

“We were hoping for the end of the year, but we thought it could go into January,” Pinkerton said after a meeting of a Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission committee on Tuesday.

In mid-December, officials from both states assured the public that federal approval was coming and the proposed highway from Lowell, IN to Wilmington, IL could move to the next stage of engineering and planning. That approval is still pending.

Sever Storey and its attorneys have already held three seminars for the proposed highway and anticipates another round in mid-late 2013.
