The massive project to create an Interstate from Lowell, IN to Wilmington, IL (appropriately dubbed the “Illiana Expressway) may bring with another project just north of Lowell. Officials announced at the Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission’s (NIRPC) meeting Tuesday that INDOT wants to add a project that will expand I-65 between U.S. 231 and U.S. 30 to three lanes in anticipation of Illiana.
In addition to the I-65 expansion, INDOT wants to add Illiana to the NIRPC 40 year transportation plan.
“They (INDOT) would like to see the Illiana in our plan this year,” NIRPC Transportation Planning Manager Bill Brown told the Northwest Indiana Times. “So it makes sense to deal with I-65 as a companion.”
