Illinois Aeronautics Director Susan Shea said the Federal Aviation Administration requires the state to acquire the estimated 5,800 acres in the inaugural footprint of the South Suburban Airport.

The controversial, long idealized “third Chicago airport” is approximately 2,300 acres short of its inaugural footprint acreage requirement, and this directive would speed up the process of acquiring those remaining parcels.
