In one of the lesser surprising moves this year by Illinois Governor Pat Quinn, the bill that will jumpstart the process for a third airport in the greater Chicagoland area was signed into law.

The bill gives the Illinois Department of Transportation the power to enter into a public-private partnership for the development, construction and operation of the airport. The bill also appropriates $70 million toward land acquisition within the inaugural footprint of the project.

The Illinois Department of Transportation Airport Master Plan is currently under review by the FAA.  Governor Quinn has asked that the process be expidited.  The airport site comprises about 5,800 acres, but could eventually encompass about 20,000 acres including land necessary for access roads and noise abatement.
