A controversial plan to widen State Boulevard in Fort Wayne just got more complicated.
Indiana Landmarks claims the plan to widen State Boulevard to four lanes and straighten out the curve would alter the historic landscape of the neighborhood, destroy historic houses and a bridge as well as threaten the neighborhood’s status on the National Register of Historic Places.
The City of Fort Wayne wants to change the layout of West State between Spy Run and Cass Street to improve flood control, traffic flow, and pedestrian and motorist safety. City officials have maintained that they do want to preserve the historic aspects of the neighborhood streets.
The project is still in the design phase, and with approval and funding, Sever Walker Padgitt would estimate land acquistion to begin shortly thereafter.
