GRUNDY COUNTY — On a Thursday afternoon where the unrelenting gusts kept the wind turbines spinning near Marshalltown, this was the ideal example of why Iowa is such a target for wind energy.
Leaders with the Rock Island Clean Line proposal filed an application with the Iowa Utilities Board earlier this month. The goal is to persuade state regulators to approve the 500-mile project, which would harness wind power from northwest Iowa and send that energy to Central Illinois for use outside of Iowa. To achieve this, Texas-based Clean Line Energy Partners, the company behind the RICL plan, is trying to secure voluntary agreements with landowners to construct the power lines.
The Illinois Commerce Commission approved the RICL plans in its state, now shifting a focus on whether Iowa will fall in line.
