The South Suburban Airport, also known as the Peotone Airport and the Abraham Lincoln National Airport, is a proposed third airport in the greater Chicagoland area. The airport, discussed for more than 40 years, has been both active and inactive during almost the entirety of its history. Land acqusition for the project has as well been intermittant and, up until recently, performed entirely without the force of eminent domain.
Recent updates: Governor Quinn appropriated almost $100 million for land acquisition in the next couple of years for the project. An important court decision in 2013 effectively authorized IDOT to instigate eminent domain lawsuits to acquire the necessary property for the airport.
