The Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie has emerges as a chief roadblock to the Illiana Expressway. The Midewin is 19,000 acres and is home to rare plant species such as the leafy prairie clover. Some groups have sued in federal and state court to stop the Illiana Expressway or at least protect the Midewin. Two lawsuits at this time have been filed. One deals with environmental concern while the other deals with the approval process of the road.
