Land acquisition has begun for a second railroad underpass as part of long-term plans to consolidate trains on the 10th Street rail corridor in Springfield.

Negotiations with business owners — and a $2 million federal construction grant announced Thursday — should mean construction later this year on the Ash Street underpass, according to local transportation planners. Work on the first underpass, at Carpenter Street between Ninth and 11th streets, started last summer and should be finished in 2016.

Carpenter and Ash are among eight underpasses and one overpass planned for relocating Union Pacific freight and Amtrak passenger trains from Third Street to the Norfolk Southern corridor on 10th Street.
